【意思1】 

v. (由指因意外或遇害)喪生/死亡/毀滅  

Thousands of people perished in the tsunami. (數千人死於那次海嘯) 

【意思2】 

v. (橡膠、皮革等)老化/脆化

Sunlight has caused the leather to perish. (皮革因暴露在陽光下而脆化) 

 

【單字2】perishable  (點選發音)

【意思】 adj. (食物)易腐爛、易變質的

Fruits are perishable in transit. 水果在運送時容易腐爛。

 

【要領】 

可拆成per + ish + able 來記，字首「per」在這有「徹底」(thoroughly)的意思，ish則源自於拉丁文ire(it變體)，含有「go」的意思，自行想像成「全都去了了」(台語)，就是毀滅、喪生。而「perishable」後邊的「able」表示「有...傾向的」，就容易聯想至「易腐壞」的意思了。
